Free Memory Box Workshop on Monday

Adults are invited to attend a free workshop with experienced artist Colin Jones, of Mudgee, to create their own memory box. Create a miniature world and learn basic exhibition construction skills using various techniques to create miniature worlds in defined spaces. This space is the 'box' and can vary in size as required and be made from any available material - recycled, of course. NetWaste and Orange City Council have organised this free workshop to be held on Monday, 19 January at the Environmental Learning Facility at Orange Showground, Leeds Parade from 1pm – 4pm. Please book your place or ask for more information by calling Sue Clarke on 6393 8771 or 0400 336 508.

Martyn Killion from the Society of Australian Genealogists presented a workshop about Family History research on Friday to the Orange Family History Group (partners with Central West Libraries), community and Central West Libraries team. It was an informative and enjoyable day and everyone learnt from the sample exercises. Thank you to all who came along and keep researching!

Poets on Wheels rolling this way

Organised by the Poets Union and supported by Arts NSW, the Poets on Wheels program has for more than a decade toured poets to all parts of NSW. The tour gives a mix of experienced and emerging poets an opportunity to try their poetry before new audiences and gives audiences the chance to hear, read with and enjoy poets that they might not otherwise get a chance to meet. It is a successful program to raise the profile of poetry in regional NSW. The poets begin their NSW tour this week – 5 towns in 7 days culminating with a wine tasting and poetry reading to be held at Orange City Library on Tuesday 21 October at 6.30pm during Wine Week. Hear three accomplished poets – David Brooks, Mark O'Flynn and Marvis Sofield read their own works, quiz the writers, read your own poem in the open section, with prizes awarded for the best local poems while enjoying a wine tasting with Rolling Wines and please bring a gold coin donation. The next day join in a poetry workshop for adults from 12pm to 3pm with the Poets on Wheels at the West Room, Orange Regional Gallery, Byng Street. It will be a lot of fun and inspiring to learn from published poets. Cost is $10 and bring along ten copies of one of your poems plus pen and paper. Please book your place by calling the Central West Writers' Centre on 6393 8125.

Writing Workshop with Deb Westbury

Inspirational poet and educator Deb Westbury hosts a writing workshop at Orange in July: For beginner writers: Writing from the Senses The best writing is generous. To show readers what you saw, felt, touched, tasted and smelled is to enable them to enter into your original experience. To simply 'tell' them leaves your readers on the outside of your experience. It is not generous or interesting. Saturday 5 July, 10am to 1pm in the West Room, Orange Regional Gallery, Byng Street, Orange.

The cost for the workshop is $35.

To book your place, please call the Central West Writers' Centre on 6393 8125.

Deb has been a familiar and respected voice in Australia poetry since her work was first published in 1975. Her poetry has since been widely anthologised, including the Oxford Anthology of Women's Verse. She teaches courses in creative writing at university and high schools and now resides in the Blue Mountains. Her latest work is The View From Here.

* Please note the previously promoted poetry workshop: Making Metaphor has been postponed.
